Gratitude in my recovery

June 21, 2023

Spent the morning before work getting the house ready for my guest’s arrival.

I am looking forward to the week ahead, one more day of work, then off for just over a week.

The first of my guests arrives tomorrow evening and then the sober fun begins!  I can’t wait to see them both again!

The evening aftercare session was focused on gratitude.

Reflecting on when I was in active addiction, I did not show any gratitude to anyone.  Addiction makes you very selfish in your actions and behaviour.  Many times people have helped me and I simply took it as a given, rather than being grateful and showing them appreciation for their help.

Now in recovery, I am grateful every day for my sobriety and the people, places and things that help me maintain it.  I am grateful every day for rehab, aftercare, the AA meetings, fellows and friends, for showing me a new life of sobriety and giving me support.

This session made me think about how I show my gratitude, and most of the time I show it through my actions.  Helping people in many different ways, even before they ask, and always as a selfless act.  I am grateful for them and do not expect anything back.  These actions I would never have done in active addiction.  I would have made a promise to myself to show my gratitude but never followed through with it.

Gratitude moves my focus away from myself and onto others, which is critical in sustaining my recovery. Gratitude helps me maintain a positive mindset, and build and strengthen relationships.

Every day I will give gratitude in my daily reflections.
